MENLO PARK RESIDENCE
Full Architectural Services
DOES Architecture designed this 3500 square foot custom home for a young family that wanted light, space, security, and privacy. Entering under a steel -edged canopy, the front door leads to a generous skylighted entry that connects the public rooms and private family quarters. The house features four bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a Great Room, and two home offices. All of the main rooms feature vaulted ceilings, clerestory windows, and skylights that bring in abundant natural light. The Great Room opens to an outdoor living area in the side yard, while the kitchen overlooks the children's play area in the back yard. To blend in with the older ranch houses in the neighborhood, the design features low-slung "saddle-bags" clad in durable painted redwood siding, with a crisp contemporary cornice that aligns with the eaves of the adjacent houses. Behind the lower outer volumes, stucco-clad gable roofed forms feature cement tile roofs over tall vaulted ceilings that provide the open, airy feeling the owners requested, without overwhelming the neighborhood scale. A 6kW solar array provides on-site power generation, and the house features low-flow faucets throughout, high-efficacy LED lighting, custom cabinetry, and durable, family-friendly finishes. The house is complimented by drought-tolerant Mediterranean and native plantings on a water-efficient zoned irrigation system, with play and outdoor seating areas accessible from the Great Room.
Construction by Mason Hammer Builders, Inc. Engineering by Pivot Structural Engineering. Landscape Design by W. Jeffrey Heid, Landscape Architect. Windows by Murray Windows. Casework by Precision Cabinets. Plumbing Fixtures by Designer's Brass. Photos by DOES Architecture.
