HUNTERS POINT HILLTOP MEWS
DOES Architecture and SMWM | Master Planning and Schematic Design
For a hillside site in the new Hunter's Point Shipyard neighborhood, DOES Architecture and SMWM designed 16 single-family townhouses along a mid block mews. Each townhouse embraces a private entry courtyard with large expanses of glazing in alternating planes of clear and obscure glass to maximize daylight and maintain privacy. The limitations of the “developer box” were accepted as a design challenge: flat siding panels are arranged in a checkerboard pattern to create a rich surface patterning that enlivens the townhouses’ simple volumes. The three-bedroom townhouse is designed to accommodate flexible uses and multi-generational families while the two-bedroom townhouse is ideal for a young professional or couple.
