ATHERTON RESIDENCE RENOVATION AND EXPANSION
Design and Construction Administration Services

For a multi-generation family in Atherton, California, DOES Architecture worked with the family to craft a double home with living spaces that met the particular tastes and needs of each generation. For the younger generations, DOES Architecture refined the existing plan to create a Great Room with indoor-outdoor connections to the gardens and terraces on each side. The aesthetic is clean and modern, with particular attention paid to the lighting, which features concealed indirect LED cove lighting at the room perimter that bathes the walls in a soft glow, and "zero edge" slots which accommodate concealed LED track lighting that can be aimed to highlight artwork and seating areas. Floors are wide-plank distressed oak in a light grey finish, walls are finished with plaster veneer and painted in soft neutrals from the Donald Kaufmann Collection. Custom walnut kitchen cabinets feature custom slip-matched veneers and are finished to look like raw unfinished wood, with touch-latches to maintain a continuous monolithic plane along the back wall.
